STFC MUSEUM- THE JOURNEY SO FAR

The STFC Museum has now been incorporated for almost 2 years with 8 Trustees and helpers continuing the journey of preserving STFCs fantastic heritage.

Work has been going on acquiring over 9000 programmes, tickets, newspaper articles and other artefacts to date; Dick Mattick, Trustee and unofficially Mr STFC has been running the Stadium Tours to great success and Vic Morgan, with the help of Steve Mytton have been compiling treasured videos to commemorate our greatest times. In fact, earlier this year, Steve and Vic took Mr John Trollope (who incidentally is the Museum’s President), Don Rogers, and Joe Butler to London whereupon they had an incredible day visiting the new Wembley. This day was pricelessly preserved by Vic and Steve on camera, and you can see this on the Museum’s website. As Vic says…. ‘Time is running out to preserve these memories’…. indeed, despite all his many past experiences connected with the Town, Vic also could not believe that one day he would be travelling the London Underground with such Legends!

The most frequent question asked of the Museum is…’where is it’?

Presently there is not one as such; parts of the County Ground are gradually being upgraded with Museum Artefacts- the John Trollope suite for example has recently been adorned with memorabilia of that famous day in 1969. Following the refurbishment of the Legends Lounge, the Museum has worked in collaboration with the Club in adorning the walls with a number of framed shirts and the latest innovation completed this Easter weekend is the placing of 23 Legends portraits to the bar area. As the ground develops it is intended to have a permanent site within the County Ground and there may be opportunities if for example the hospitality areas do move to the DR stand.

The video showing the portraits can be viewed at the bottom of this post.

One final initiative undertaken only this past week, was the incorporation of the Former Players Association under the Museums management. A dinner was held attended by such Legends as John, Tom Jones, and Paul Bodin; regular newsletters are now going out to the Former Players and further events are planned.

And a final word from the aforementioned Mr. Dick Mattick….

The quality of food and service at the Former Players Dinner showed what could be achieved if flexible, up to date facilities were available.

The new plan for the Don Rogers Stand would seem to bring this about and would also mean that rooms with basic fitments would merely need display cabinets and wall fittings to make the dream of a museum a reality. I think it was Winston Churchill who said a country that forgets its past has no future.

The same is true of football clubs.

These plans show the current ownership has not forgotten this club’s glorious heritage and would show any new owners or investors what a successful football club they a part of would be when the club, its supporters and townsfolk pull together.
