STFC Museum Expands Hall of Fame Including New Home

Swindon Town legends find new home as Museum expands Hall of Fame.

Swindon Town fans will have a new way to celebrate the Club’s greatest heroes following the launch of a new Hall of Fame display in the Legends Lounge. The Board will be formally unveiled at the Museum event this coming Wednesday.

The Hall of Fame was initiated in 2011. The rationale was to commemorate past players who had made a notable contribution to the Club’s performance and success. The player’s names were decided upon then by a select Committee made up of ex-players Don, Rogers, John Trollope and Paul Bodin, Club historians Paul Plowman and Dick Mattick, Chairman of the STFC Supporters Club Roger Bunce and BBC Wiltshire’s Shaun Hodgetts.
58 names were chosen and added to the Board, with a number of these great players receiving commemorative ties and being presented to the crowd at match days.

The Hall of Fame / Board then lay idle with no names added past 1993. In 2023, the Club approached the Museum to review and upgrade the Board and process.
A panel was chosen consisting of Vic Morgan, Dick Mattick and Paul Plowman who then made the additional recommendations. The Board was then updated and now holds 104 names.
However, the Museum trustees felt that, following the refurbishment of the Legends Lounge in 2024/ 25, it would be good to not only have a Board there so a greater number of fans could view, but to commemorate still more players. A player had had to have made a significant contribution, and this may have been for a short period (as in some cases half a season).

The Museum has also promised that the Hall of Fame will no longer be a ‘set-and-forget’ project. The list will now be reviewed every season, ensuring that as modern stars retire, they find their rightful place among the greats of the past. Players will also be invited to matches / events to receive their induction tie.

Andy Cossens, who undertook the recent upgrades on behalf of the Museum trustees said:

‘it was an honour to be asked to participate in this initiative, recognising the great players of our past and indeed some who had previously not been added- it fits with our objective in enhancing the Legends Lounge into an area where we can truly remember the Town’s incredible past and those that contributed to it”.
“The Hall of Fame is about more than just names on a board; it’s about ensuring past players from our Club’s history are never forgotten. By replicating this display in the Legends Lounge, we are making sure the supporters can finally share in that legacy. We’ve worked hard to include those who might have been overlooked in the past, ensuring that every era of Swindon Town is represented.”

For the Museum, the project is a vital part of their mission to inspire the next generation of Town fans. By tracking every player to wear the shirt for over 140 years, they are ensuring the stories of the County Ground live on for years to come.
